Dead Gecko

I saw a dead gecko yesterday
on the stark tiles of
the bathroom floor.
It had no tail.
A transparent belly
glared up at me marbled
with hidden eggs.
Bloody limbs
ending
before they should
in ribbons of earth brown
spread out in
the promise of
a loving embrace.
I reached down to
pick it up
but it was swatted
out of reach
by a furry set of claws
before I could return it
to the soil. |
